Google Gets US Approval To Buy and Sell Energy
- ashishbharthi 17y agoThey already announced plans for broadband distribution and now Energy. What is next?
- mcav 17y agoNext, we see if they actually do something with it.
- Terretta 17y agoEnron.

- NEPatriot 17y agoNext they buy walmart, and after that... the US govt. Such that google will control our power, data infrastructure, commercial goods, and govt!
- DannoHung 17y agoNew, from Google, Google Drone. Now your maps can update in real time and terminate Terrorists with extreme prejudice.
- greyman 17y agoGoogle will ultimately build a self-sustained ad distribution platform. ;-) Let's imagine, company which will not depend on any other company. Maybe one day they will buy some small country and became even independent from U.S. government.
- alextp 17y ago> Let's imagine, company which will not depend on any other company. And, pray tell, where would they get the cash?
- NEPatriot 17y agoconsumers
- smallblacksun 17y agoConsumers will be buying advertisements?
- NEPatriot 17y agoconsumers will see the google ads for google products and buy them
- cmelbye 17y agoActually, buying their own country might be a plausible next step for them, as crazy as it might sound.
- ohwaitnvm 17y agoCalifornia's 'Pacific Gas and Electric' becomes 'Pacific Google and Electric'
- blhack 17y agoBefore the theories start going too crazy, I'm going to venture a guess that this has to do with their datacenters. Didn't google build a hydroelectric dam somewhere in the northwest to power one? I'm guessing they're just looking to sell off the excess energy they're producing at places like that, I doubt they're looking to become your utility company.
- warfangle 17y agoVery true. This is probably just so they can negotiate for cheaper power for their datacenters, and sell excess power if they build their own plants. Here's to hoping they can cut through the nuclear red tape and build a LFTR reactor. If they can get one of those off the ground and powering one of their datacenters, it would prove to the world that nuclear power shouldn't have the stigma it does.
- mbreese 17y agoI thought it was so they could better buy energy from renewable resources. They've always put datacenters in locations with excess electrical capacity, but this makes it possible for them to offset their potentially dirty (coal) electricity usage with cleaner energy elsewhere.
- smallblacksun 17y agoThis is 100% about saving money, not being green.
- fnid2 17y agoIIRC, they didn't build that dam, they simply built a data center near it. It was near the dalles in oregon, if that's the one you're talking about. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/14/technology/14search.html http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/14/technology/14search.html I don't believe they want to start building power plants. I believe they want to be able to buy energy wholesale to lower their energy costs by buying power directly and avoiding middleman markup.

- siculars 17y agoCan anyone else see Google becoming the Stark Industries of the Informatics Age complete with their own Arc reactors?
- zandorg 17y agoGoogle appears to be thrashing around like a conglomerate trying to have another hit record.
