I'm with Knuth here, a lot of the arguments for discrete function units sound like premature optimization. In the end, you won't get the equivalent of the MODULA-3 standard library or something equally well-defined, but PHP4's mudball of functions. All this because a few bytes of functions would ruin your experience and/or dead code eliminiation isn't part of your pipeline.
