Don't know what this guy used exactly, but GifCam is really good - http://blog.bahraniapps.com/gifcam/ http://blog.bahraniapps.com/gifcam/ - it's not fancy, but it's well done on the engineering side, maintains good FPS when capturing and compresses really well.
