If you like oh-my-zsh you'll love https://fishshell.com/ https://fishshell.com/. The main difference I use is better command completion as you're typing, and you can complete by word with alt-f. And ruby like syntax.
for example (| is the cursor and everything after it is grey text)
>echo hello world
hello world
>echo |hello world # alt-f
>echo hello| world
Fish and oh-my-zsh both take about 5 seconds to init though. If you don't like that you should be using prezto (which is the fork he mentions in the article)

- domoritz 11y agohttp://fisherman.sh/ http://fisherman.sh/ is the prezto of fish shell. Works great and is blazingly fast.
- Dharmakirti 11y agoAs a Fish user since it's inception, I humbly disagree. Oh-My-Fish[0] is the preferred and popular plugin framework for Fish. The guy behind Fisherman abused DMCA to discredit OMF, which was a pretty shady tactic for an open-source project. [0]https://github.com/oh-my-fish/oh-my-fish https://github.com/oh-my-fish/oh-my-fish
- voltagex_ 11y agoI really want to use something like Fish (or at least try out a whole lot of not-bash, at least to force me to write /bin/sh compatible scripts) but because it's not installed by default I often don't get around to it. I really should go back to learning Ansible...
- bucaran 11y ago> The guy behind Fisherman abused DMCA to discredit OMF I am one of the guys behind Fisherman and I didn't abuse the DMCA to discredit OMF, on the contrary, I used it to have my name properly represented in their AUTHORS file. Now, one thing I am accountable for is, spending days and weeks nurturing and improving the project when I was involved with it. I don't know where you get your facts from, but I urge you to pay a visit to the contributor graphs in the OMF GitHub page and see who's done what and how much. > is the preferred and popular plugin framework for Fish. - cosarara97 11y agoPrezto is not terribly fast either, in my experience. I went from oh-my-zsh to prezto, and from there to a simple config, always just to reduce bloat.

- omtose 11y ago>Fish and oh-my-zsh both take about 5 seconds to init though Greatly disagree on the fish startup time, for me it takes approximately the same time as bash. Can't comment on zsh though.
- autoreleasepool 11y agoThe unit times definitely depends on how trim you keep your configure. My OMZ takes about 1-2 seconds to init on my slowest machine
- tholmes 11y agoRegarding fish startup time I had a problem with fish taking forever before. Turned out my ~/.config/fish/fishd.<hostname> file had erroneously ballooned to many megabytes. This caused a very long startup time. It should typically be a few kilobytes.
- Something1234 11y agoWhat actually ended up in this file?
- tholmes 11y agoI actually never looked inside! I deleted all of those files without looking in them. Only after my performance improved did I check my scrollback and notice it was huge :(
