I think if you have a good eye for design and you are a good coder you can do both. I'm no designer but I have a love of writing code and learning about software development and I am, at the moment, a front end developer. I don't design things, but I can put together something that looks OK. You will find people who can do both. You will also find areas of work where the requirement to be an expert or really good at one or the other mean that you cannot devote enough time to the other for it to be worth your while.
