I think they're taking a cue from the way car trim levels are marketed. Consumers have learned to associate meaning with concise trim names, e.g. SE (standard, small, sporty), LE/LX/LS (luxury), etc. Names are concise and global* without directly pointing out the fact some editions are inferior to others ("Limited", "Standard", "Plus", "Super").

(* that is, you don't really need to know that SEL stands for Sonderklasse Einspritzung (Lange) to know it comes with something more than an SL).
