You can replace "trendy" with "good cultural fit" in many places. Cultural fit is arguably the most important factor in hiring someone. From my network, I see a hugely different culture at Microsoft and Google. Just saying.
- wolfgke 11y agoIf this is so important: why don't they specify the desired culture values beforehand in the job ad so that people who don't fit don't have to waste their time applying for the job?
- VLM 11y agoBecause writing "young white men only need apply" is a fast track to a lawsuit. Its obviously OK to implement it, plenty of examples of that, just not OK to talk about it in public.
- wolfgke 11y agoWhat reason does the company have to think that young white men fit the job better? I can imagine that there are properties that these kind of people have that makes them a better fit, but why not advertize these properties instead? This should probably not lead to a lawsuite.
- ahoka 11y agoI think it mostly boils down to the "people like us" effect.
- ScottAS 11y agoBecause it's so easy to fake "cultural fit" during the relatively short hiring process.
- wolfgke 11y agoI don't think so. For the reason why I disagree: Lots of cultural values take a lot of time to internalize, but are easy to check/hard to fake. For example if one property of "cultural fit" is "loves the UNIX way of thinking and writing programs" it is easy to check with few questions if he/she has internalized it or is faking it. Or if "cultural fit" implies "loves doing hackathons" the prospective employee will have taken lots of time at hackathons in the past. If there is nothing to be found in the internet of the hackathons that he/she was on (say, either from the Hackathon's website, pictures in social network, source code on Github/Bitbucket etc.), he/she is probably faking. etc.
- hodgesrm 11y agoThe problem with "good cultural fit" is that you need to ask some really hard questions about what you mean by that phrase. In many companies it seems to boil down to "people I'm comfortable hanging out with." Very strong engineering teams are not necessary comfortable places, because they have members with different but complementary viewpoints. The cultural fit in this case is to be able to debate vigorously but also to be able to accept decisions and move on together. It's not that important to be friends outside of work.
- cp9 11y agoexcept "culture fit" is usually a code word for a 25 year old white guy who walks and talks like me.
- ScottAS 11y agoNo - it's not at all. Quite the opposite. People who fit into a specific work culture bind together from across many different nationalities and upbringings.
