Please make up your minds.
- heartsucker 11y agoThere's a difference between accepting that other people dress in "slutty" outfits and making it ok, and not wanting sexuality jammed down your throat at a technology event.
- rewqfdsa 11y agoIt was an optional afterparty at a dance club.
- tptacek 11y agoThe whole conference is "optional".
- heartsucker 11y agoMost decisions in life are optional. Getting a driver's license is optional, so if women complained about go-go dancers in the DMV making them feel uncomfortable, would you tell them "driver's licenses are optional, so don't get one?"
- tptacek 11y agoWhat?

- tptacek 11y agoProbably. This whole "it's an optional event" thing is a trope. It's offered as an argument over and over again. But if you run a professional networking event, whether you call it "optional" or not has very little to do with whether people will feel compelled to attend. Asking someone's peer group to attend an optional event that pointlessly alienates them is just as bad as mandating attendance. In fact, in some ways, it's worse: at least if it's mandated, you don't endure an internal debate about whether to put up with it and attend for the career benefit.
- heartsucker 11y agoYes, that is more or less the point I was trying to make.
- nmbr213 11y ago> not wanting sexuality jammed down your throat How is a couple go-go dancers are 'jamming down your throat'? Really, if they are the first thing you see at a party and can't focus, maybe the problem is with you? > a technology event It was an afterparty, nothing to do with the main event.
