A Course in Universal Algebra

- jules 17y agoYou need set theory. With only high school math it will be difficult. With 1 year university math you're ok.
- fexl 17y agoI much prefer well-defined combinatorics over the vagaries of set theory. Combinatorics are executable, meaning that they map directly to physical devices, and the only "paradox" in combinatorics is non-termination, which is just a simple fact of life.
- jules 17y agoWell, yes, but can you do universal algebra on top of combinatorics? I see several mentions of Zorn's lemma, so the answer is probably NO ;)
- sarosh 17y agoFor those hesitant to click: the site contains an out-of-print original Springer-Verlag Graduate Text in Mathematics 1981 edition of "A Course in Universal Algebra" by Stanley N. Burris and H.P. Sankappanavar in PDF. Universal algebra is the use of set theory to study "algebraic structures" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_algebra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_algebra
- gprisament 17y agoI see...we need Universal Algebra because Abstract Algebra isn't abstract enough.
