Yes I wonder if this is a little short sighted. Currently Uber needs to hire drivers who use their own cars. Once self drive vehicles become available they only need the cars. Given that most peoples cars spend the majority of their time parked, waiting to be used, that is an awful lot of potential cars for Uber to rent. I'd be very interested in having my car earning money while I'm at work or asleep.
