I made a proof-of-concept of this a while ago (http://www.mrspeaker.net/2012/03/24/syntax-highlighting-for-writers/ http://www.mrspeaker.net/2012/03/24/syntax-highlighting-for-...) - my "writer-friends" weren't into it (what do they know!)... but then there was a post on HN a few years later where someone had patented the idea!
