how many of you use fb? I removed all social media 2 years ago
- logicallee 11y agoyou didn't get any responses but I would venture to say that 90% of the people whose eyes glanced over your question (which is not necessarily who you intended to hear from, it sounds like you would have liked to hear confirmation from others who are the same) have exchanged at least 1 facebook message in the past week. Facebook has 1.591 billion monthly active users, whereas the grand total of anyone connected to the Internet in any way is 3 billion users, obviously almost all of them outside of the English-speaking world. there was indeed a movement to "remove all social media" a couple of years ago, but it ran out of a lot of steam: https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%22delete%20facebook%22 https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%22delete%20facebook... There are a lot of privacy settings you can utilize, and you are probably missing out on a lot of opportunities by not being on Facebook: it's costing you. I was hugely against facebook for a very, very long time. But the fact is, some people simply do not use email, and you can ask for their facebook and communicate with them and build an acquaintanceship, or not do so. The opportunity cost to not using facebook is too much for me: I "can't afford" not to use it in fostering new acquaintanceships with people I meet in passing. Events are another huge thing that is exclusionary and costs me if I am not on facebook.
- travelbyphone 11y agoI'm usually an early adopter, and was for fb, but recently I noticed my life is much better without fb/messenger/Instagram on my phone. It's been 6 months and whenever I go to fb web to check out I have hundreds of notifications and messages, but never once lost something truly important. They have my number for that. I sense a social media burn out on a lot of people lately. We're not built for this crazy amount of interactions on a single day.
- jorgecurio 11y agoit gets better and better. I'm in my 2nd year without fb and haven't looked back since. Removing linkedin was great too. I never had instgram or snapchat. I had twitter but found it largely the most useless out of them all. I use skype for chat. I like reddit and sometimes HN when there are interesting discussions going on.
- jorgecurio 11y agoI always get the 'oh but you are missing out'. The only type of people I'm missing out are people who believe that facebook is helping them somehow. In my experience, real people are ones you can make face time happen. Everyone else is secondary. I remember reading a while back someone posted that they are sick and was shocked to learn that only a few out of their 500 friends list from facebook actually gave a shit. all in all, facebook is a modern day cigarette, hardly a platform to build meaningful and deep relationships focusing on quality. I feel great not knowing what my friends are up to every fucking minute of their day. It's liberating to know that I'm not bound by any pecking order that is established on such medium. I also don't have linkedin for the same reason. Twitter? Bitch please. The only thing I enjoy is reddit and occassionally HN as it has transformed into a PC circlejerk in the past 4 years. I mostly just read the news on this website. I already made all the connections from HN. Ironically, some of my most life changing people I met were through HN. However, I think those good ol days of HN is gone with the excessive moderating and 'hurt feelings'. Whatsapp was an expensive land-grab move. But land value always changes and Zuck bought it at the highest point. Now, it's not so much as valuable since Snapchat following the same logic would be a target for Facebook using the same reason. In my opinion, Zuck thinks he's buying a market chasm but in reality these are just distractions not core to facebook. $19 billion dollar mistake is what I call it. You couldn't spend 10% of that to build out your own? To me that's just lazy. Lately there seem to be a gang of angry and biter people just doing drive by downvoting when they can't accept that others don't see the world in the same way they do. Pathetic cowards if you ask me, they will most likely downvote this and throw some smart ass retort starting with 'back in my day we had AOL or some lame ass shit'
- chei0aiV 11y agoHN counts as social media.
- jorgecurio 11y agothats pretty sad if you think that
- chei0aiV 11y agoCould you explain what you mean?
- hudell 11y agoI use the messenger part of it and I have a page to share stuff about the game I'm making, but I rarely ever use the timeline or other stuff like that.
