I think domains are overrated. Who cares if it's tesla.com vs teslamotors.com? Most people go through Google anyway; I don't think I've seen my parents type anything into the address bar, ever.
- nfriedly 11y agoYep. I always chuckle* a little bit when I see a family member go to Google, type "facebook.com" in the search box, then click the first result. *It beats crying.
- furyofantares 11y agoOn the other hand, if they make a typing error they will likely still get the correct result, rather than some scam site.
- jkestner 11y agoHadn't thought of search engines as a URL cleaning service. I guess I do that sometimes too. Or rather, the combined address/search field does that now.
- scott_s 11y agoI do that a lot. foobar.com or foo-bar.com? Both probably work, but it's a lot easier to just open a new tab, use the address bar as a search engine, and pick the one that's obviously correct.
- covercash 11y agoI watched the IT director in charge of a 5000 MacBook school system do that most of the time, except sub in Yahoo for Google... Such a dirty district.
- adevine 11y agoBut it's really not that different than the unified address bars that all browsers support now.
- scott_s 11y agoYou shouldn't. It works. They can get what they want without understanding everything about the interaction. You do that too, with other things in your life. As do I, as do we all.
- zyxley 11y agoA while back there was some random blog (alas, I can't remember the details) that, due to some quirk of Google rankings, ended up first in Google search results for "facebook" for a couple of days. It ended up deluged by thousands of comments of people complaining about not being able to log into Facebook.
- michaelbuckbee 11y agoIt's old now (and I wonder how much it's changed) - but there is this great video of Google employees asking people in Times Square what the difference is between a browser and a search engine: https://youtu.be/o4MwTvtyrUQ https://youtu.be/o4MwTvtyrUQ Most people conflate the two. IIRC the video was used internally as a tool to press the notion that they _had_ to build a browser or risk losing their search engine dominance.
- johnward 11y agoWas that originally recorded in 2009 too?
