Presumably you'd have access to the plaintext after decrypting it at the other end of the channel. Why wouldn't client-side search work if you wrote the entire app?

Also, to get Slack's functionality, you need to be able to search through history that your client might not have "seen" yet because you were not in the channel when it happened.
