Maybe one reason the author is depressed and seems a bit aimless is that when you put the kind of energy into a company, which I'm sure he did at GitHub, then the relationship grows beyond something simple like employee/employer and closer to family. When the relationship falls apart, for whatever reason, it is like getting a divorce. I spent most of my career at one company, and when I decided to leave, dealing with that separation was a lot harder than I thought it would be.
