I've lived in houses with up to 4 other people. When I travel, I frequently use hostels. This sounds like an interesting concept if executed well. The main reason I eventually moved into a two bedroom apartment was more to have a better location and nicer place than to get away from people. How many resources do we waste on underutilized space? The US is more extreme here than any other country I've heard of.
