I always read /newest first. I figure there's a pretty good incentive. Early votes have the greatest impact. So at the cost of a little bit more time spent foraging, you can promote more stuff you're interested so it will get talked about by lots of smart people. I think I get a better collection of saved links too, but that's subjective.
