I would say people matter more than the language. If the smartest people at Badoo are most comfortable with PHP, then that is what they should go with. Let them do their jobs in the most efficient way they know how, in this case, PHP.
The 1 million Badoo saved here is nothing compared to how much more money they made from having these people build their platform.

- SmellyGeekBoy 11y agoSmart people can achieve really great things with PHP. The problem is that the barrier to entry is so low that the not-so-smart use it too and end up giving the whole language a bad reputation.

- mtbcoder 11y agoI will further expand on this and say that I would take a well documented/commented code base written in an unsexy language any day over one cowboy-coded in whatever the languague/framework-du-jour happens to be.
