Ugh, we are a startup, we invested in influxdb on faith that it would "get there", developed around it, and now we can't afford what they want to charge for the scalable version.
Maybe we can avoid clustering with some workaround, (sharding) but I feel tricked.
- pauldix 11y agoI'm sorry that you feel tricked. I hope that one of the open source options handles your use case if commercial software doesn't work for you. However, we think that the community will be better off if we can continue to contribute to the open source InfluxDB. We want to invest heavily in open and closed source software. Ultimately the open source community will benefit from an open InfluxDB
- ericb 11y agoA pricing model that scaled with usage and was more inexpensive at the low-end would, in my opinion, better serve your company and customers. That way you pull more people into the product and increase the overall size of the pie.
- redwood 11y agoIn all seriousness how is it possible that you're running a business and can't afford to pay what is basically a very small amount for some software? I'm guessing you also have customers and are trying to figure out how it is that you can get them to pay you money so that you yourself can create a long-term business and create better products over time. Right?
- ericb 11y agoI see you've never bootstrapped a startup before. The clustering was (accidentally) bait and switched and led us to choose this product when we would have made other decisions.
- pauldix 11y agoIs it useful to you now without clustering?
- ericb 11y agoPotentially, however, it won't meet our initial design objectives. One is that we would have a single point of failure. Another issue is that we can't count on it being expandable space-wise going forward past the single machine level, meaning we can't just assume "and we'll add more machines if data builds up." I'd have to test at what level (in our system) we'd hit a wall with the throughput for a single-node setup.
- pauldix 11y agoAnd the basic double write HA architecture doesn't work in the short term? It's free and we'll have the code out and OSS with the 0.12 release. And when it comes time to scale out you still won't be able to afford the commercial version? Or you could write your own sharding proxy or layer in your application.
- ericb 11y agoWe're open to paying once we're rolling. It's more that you've so far only said "basic is $400" and it isn't clear what that means or what will drive people to "more than basic." It's hard to get suprised, and then be waiting for the "fool me twice" pricing to come. I've been a fan of your work since Typhoeus and that's part of why I was happy to bet on you making influx amazing. I just didn't see the pricing risk coming (maybe I should have). For our perspective, the pricing issue is scary because a load test can be high volume without the normal correlation to "really big enterprise business" that makes it a good way to price. Is the double-write architecture the nginx solution shown here? https://influxdata.com/high-availability/ https://influxdata.com/high-availability/
