I think you're reading too much in to "natural". I just see someone trying to say peels are a preexisting attribute of oranges without using the word "preexisting" because that would ruin the joke structure they're using to make their point. "If only there were [roundabout way of describing something that seems obvious to speaker but are feigning ignorance to]..." is a well worn construction.
