I just don't like that the Echo is always listening and waiting for you to address it. Maybe is there was a smart phone app or a clicker I could press to bring it to attention then I'd be more interested.

That is a thing you can do - the Echo comes with a remote, so you can mute the main mic, and speak into the remote if you wish.

You can mute the microphone and use the echo remote control instead.
