- dudul 11y agoRobot actually means "slave" in Czech language.
- stonogo 11y agoNo it doesn't. That's "otrok". "Robot" is derived from the Polish for "chore".
- dudul 11y agohttp://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2012/05/where-does-the-word-robot-come-from/ http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2012/05/where-does-t... "Josef suggested ‘roboti’, which gave rise to the English ‘robot’. ‘Roboti’ derives from the Old Church Slavanic ‘rabota’, meaning ‘servitude’, which in turn comes from ‘rabu’, meaning ‘slave’."
- ommunist 11y agoNo. Thy the term itself was invented by Czech author Chapek, it has no that meaning.
- thaumasiotes 11y agoAnd hey, the english word "slave" comes from the ethnic group that gave us the Czechs, but I don't think that says much about modern Czechs or modern slaves.
- schoen 11y agoAmazingly, also cognate with "ciao" (via Italian "schiavo"). https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ciao#Etymology_3 https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ciao#Etymology_3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciao#Etymology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciao#Etymology
- beat 11y agoRobots are not slaves, because they are not living beings, and do not possess consciousness or free will. It's not that complicated.
- ommunist 11y agoEhm... Slaves do not possess free will. That is why they are slaves.
- beat 11y agoSlaves possess free will. They do not possess freedom.
- ommunist 11y agoAnd why do not they enjoy freedom? Because they do not have enough free will to fight for it. Read Harriet Beecher Stowe classics on psychology of slavery. Hence, if you not command yourself, you subdue to the other. No one forcibly keeps those guys and gals at factories.
- ommunist 11y agoIf robots are programmed to create other robots and are programmed to avoid harm and attune to find resources - they are conscious and have free will. Define consciousness and free will.
- drdeca 11y agoConsciousness is the internal subjective experience that one has.
