I find this really weird for the following reason. Only cost conscious developers care about running db server on the same machine as application server to keep costs low. Such people wont buy SQL Server at all for the cost related reasons. Non cost conscious developers can always run SQL Server on a separate Windows machine while keeping their application servers on Linux. Except Microsoft intends to make SQL Server free and make it replace Mysql among small developers and later help them buy SQL Server instances in cloud and make money.
