Thank you for writing this. I am sad to see the grand parent down voted because it seems the down voters themselves have not read the article.
Personally, I feel like I am the worst kind of people. I remember being in Texas about nine years back talking to some young women who were passionately anti-choice (or pro-life as they call themselves) and I found myself thinking "but you're a woman". I don't I said anything that revealed my thought process. It feels like it should be easy, right? Just treat individuals as individuals and don't stereotype. Well, easier said than done in my case. Similarly with black people. Just because someone is black and American does not mean they have to be in favor of reparations. Just because someone is a woman does not mean they have to be a feminist. I remind myself of this fact every so often and I realize I am a bad person. However, worse than me are the people who dare tell others they are wrong and don't know what is best for them because of their ideas or choices.

It takes constant effort to try to see something from different perspectives. Sometimes you end up changing your mind; or, on account of how nice you are and how well you explain your side, you may end up changing theirs. It's good that you're at least trying to improve yourself. That means you're already doing better than many people out there.
