If you hire a worker for minimum wage to stock shelves, and they do a shitty job of it, do you blame the worker? Or is it your fault for making a poor hiring decision?
The same question applies with a CEO, which the shareholders, presumably, voted in. They could have put in someone else, maybe someone who, gasp, charges more, to run a $100 billion company.
I don't understand this attitude, as if "the powers that be"/"the Man"/"the 1%" put the CEO there and therefore it's all their fault that you don't make as much as them.
- pyre 11y agoI think some of the resentment comes from "Golden Parachutes" too. While it's stupid for the Board to allow a contract where the CEO get $X million even if they run the company into the ground, the CEO that runs the company into the ground bears some responsibility too.
- reddytowns 11y agoWhy don't you become a consultant, then, and tell companies to hire the cheapest CEO they can get, and see how that works out for them? Aiee! Jesus, downvoters, dissent from the party line isn't tolerated, is it?
- dang 11y ago> Jesus, downvoters, dissent from the party line isn't tolerated, is it? These downvotes have nothing to do with a "party line" but with your comments being unsubstantive. Comments on HN need to be both civil and substantive. Also, it breaks the rules to go on about downvotes in HN comments. You've done this often in previous threads too; please don't. We have not one but two guidelines about it: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- reddytowns 11y agoWe detached this subthread from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11221340 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11221340 and marked it off-topic. So now, I'm not only downvoted, but censored, too. Ah, I get it, denial. shrugs... Ugh, and downvoted again. Maybe I should submit a "Downvote reddytowns" topic
- maxxxxx 11y agoFor years we have been told that the increase in CEO pay is linked to performance. That means they get a lot of credit when things go well and should take the blame when things don't go well.
- reddytowns 11y agoThings break, plans fail, people lie. Get over it.
