The programming world has lots of smart, talented, capable people whose resumes won't get them even a phone interview from Google. Coding interviews deserve their bad reputation, but dammit, there is no better way to learn whether or not a candidate for a programming job understands the really basic concepts than to have them write a little bit of code that can't be written if you lack the aptitude.
