Chicken scheme is a friendly implementation, they have a good package manager and modules repository, along with an api search tool, an active IRC, and pretty extensive documentation. It also compiles to C which is really nice. The book The Scheme Programming Language http://amzn.com/026251298X http://amzn.com/026251298X is a good overview of the main libraries and language features, and has lots of examples. Other than that, I've been learning mostly through google and trial and error.
