I absolutely agree that this makes Lisp/Scheme incredibly difficult for a newcomer -- on that note, could you recommend any resources for a beginner interested in learning Scheme? I've looked at Racket, and it seems to be the only newcomer-friendly "hub" out there, so to speak.
- music 11y agoScheme and the Art of Programming by G Springer is a great book. It's more formal and structured as compared to other well known popular alternatives. After this book, SICP will be a walk in the park. You can find solutions to the first 7 chapters here: http://playpen.sixbit.org/studies/aop/ http://playpen.sixbit.org/studies/aop/

It also compiles to C which is really nice. The book The Scheme Programming Language http://amzn.com/026251298X http://amzn.com/026251298X is a good overview of the main libraries and language features, and has lots of examples. Other than that, I've been learning mostly through google and trial and error.
