I believe the author is angry at how many people in the author/publishing world flout this "bug" as a way to fool possible customers rather than the bug itself. He mentions working with a lot of NYT best-sellers and I can imagine it would be frustrating for people to claim they are on the same level after doing something like this.

This. The sheer quantity of terrible content marketers whose sole content is selling the idea that you can become a bestselling author who wear this badge is absurd.
