Question which I can't get out of my head: It would stand to reason that the ruling on this case would affect other commercial phone and/or OS manufacturers, but how would it reflect on some OSS projects, where the coders are not necessarily employees of the project?

- wongarsu 11y agoWe are talking about physical phones produced by Apple, to which law enforcement has physical access. From my understanding this is more about Apple as a hardware manufacturer, who just happens to also produce the software for the same phone. I fail to relate the scenario we have now to software project (though no doubt the FBI will try to). With hardware you typically have a clear manufacturer. However things might get interesting if more people make their own hardware using open-source designs.

The government needs to understand that this is the implication of the direction in which it wishes to take us.
