It's really weird to read this kind of article from outside the USA, where healthcare is a public service.
(of course, here in the UK, the tories are doing their best to ruin the NHS, but it's still so much better than this).
- brandonmenc 11y agoEvery time there's a health care post people chime in with the useless comment, "this is really weird to those of us not in the USA." Jeez, really? Wow.
- remh 11y agoI agree with that. But, as a European, I also agree with the parent comment. It is weird in the sense that we could never think of something like that, things such as a "doughnut hole" where a few months a year you don't have an insurance. I currently live and work in the US, love it, love the country. I have the chance to have a great plan thanks to my company. But i'm not sure how much more I can keep tacitly approving this system.
- brandonmenc 11y ago> I also agree with the parent comment What's not to agree with? The parent comment is simply stating nothing more than a fact we're all well aware of - that we have a different system in the US.
- maxerickson 11y agoThe doughnut hole isn't that weird, a coverage was expanded, with a limit on how far it was expanded. The limitation is on spending, not related to the calendar beyond that: https://www.medicare.gov/part-d/costs/coverage-gap/part-d-coverage-gap.html https://www.medicare.gov/part-d/costs/coverage-gap/part-d-co... Of course once the annual limit is reached coverage is reduced for a period of time, but there will also be cases where the limit is not reached. And while it doesn't compare favorably to a simpler to access program that covers all expenses, enacting it didn't make anybody that ends up using it worse off.
- officialchicken 11y agoEvery time there's a health care post, people need to chime in with the comment, "this is really fucked up in the USA, they kill for profit."
- Super_Jambo 11y agoIt clearly is still necessary since HN still has it's libertarian extremists who can't believe that healthcare works vastly better under government run systems.
