I'm not a fan of "outrage news." This is a case of someone saying something stupid. (At least this time it isn't on twitter)
You know how hard it is to find someone who says something stupid on the internet? Not at all. (who's got two thumbs and is typing right now?... this guy)
I was actually prepared for a bait-and-switch and to agree with this guy. He's 100% right that he shouldn't be accosted by homeless people.
But because the social safety net should take care to make sure people don't become homeless.
This comes down to the subjects of Bernie Sanders' platform. Income inequality, minimum wage, etc...
But really, an "outrage-manipulation-clickbait" article (in my opinion) isn't the type of thing that we should be supporting on HackerNews. Doesn't really deserve an upvote.
- ethanbond 11y agoHow is it outrage manipulation clickbait? It's exactly what he said, and my first perception of it was exactly what he meant. I would agree with you if he said this and then further explained what you did: "you shouldn't have to be accosted by homeless people because the social safety net should work..." Rather, he confirmed what we all suspected to be the attitude held by the uglier half of the tech community. It should be discussed, but maybe it shouldn't devolve to a takedown of this one guy who – you're right – simply said something stupid. Edit: After reading the actual letter (here: http://justink.svbtle.com/open-letter-to-mayor-ed-lee-and-greg-suhr-police-chief http://justink.svbtle.com/open-letter-to-mayor-ed-lee-and-gr...), it's honestly pretty sensible except paragraph 6. All of the crappy ubercapitalist rhetoric is contained to that one paragraph.
