If there are no ads and no corporate sponsorships then how do they make money?
- Mithaldu 11y agoGotta love how "remove the vast majority of the cash flow" is a "micro" improvement.
- kiba 11y agoBasically nobody wants ads. But if nobody wants to pay for a service, then maybe it isn't as useful as we thought.
- the_watcher 11y agoAlso, Reddit ads are among some of the least intrusive on the web. Every sub is filled with posts not everyone cares about, the ability to ignore the ads if you aren't interested in is built into Redditing
- s_m_t 11y agoMy cynical/conspiratorial side says that the reason the voting system is 'fuzzed' isn't because it makes it harder for bots to game the system (this explanation doesn't make sense to me because you will always know how well a post is doing by its place on the page, who cares how many upvotes it has if you know you botted your post to rank #4?) but because it allows the admins to more easily manipulate votes. Instead of selling advertisements on the sides of the page they could just boost certain posts and it would be extremely hard to tell from the outside that they are doing this because the votes are kept obfuscated. Even better, instead of naively just giving posts upvotes you could apply a secret upvote multiplier to certain posts. This way only secret advertisements that people are already mildly receptive to would make it to the front page lest you alienate your audience too much.
