It's almost certain that Apple helped American government to violate customer's privacy. It looks to me this is just a marketing stunt for post-Snowden revelation. If Apple cared customer's privacy and security so much, how could they sell non-free software that is hard to audit, computer with baseband processor, relies on central server which allows the single point of failure. My understanding is Apple customer don't much care about their own privacy and security but has weakness on marketing.
