Why is China a thug of a government?
- it_learnses 11y agonon-elected dictatorship.
- Cyph0n 11y agovs. heavily lobbied Congress that makes the real decisions. I build you a factory in your home town, you say yes to these heavy arms sales. My point is that the line between democracy and autocracy is quite thin in reality.
- stevetrewick 11y agoThat's on you then, elect some better ones. That thin line is the demos.
- Cyph0n 11y agoYep, that's the beauty of it. The choice is yours, so choose wisely. If you're not satisfied, wait until the next election and choose someone else. I'm from Tunisia, so I can appreciate how it feels to successfully transition from an autocracy to a democracy.
- vkou 11y agoIn 2014, Congress had a ~5% approval rating, and a 95% re-election rating. "Kick the bastards out" works well in some democracies, and less well in others.
- knowaveragejoe 11y agoThis is an admonishment of the American public more than anything. Apathy is rampant among most people.
- ihsw 11y agoIf the farce of the Democratic Party leader nomination is any indication of democracy in the US then you're in for a big disappointment -- the winners and losers are hand-picked there as well.
- neximo4 11y agoThe members are elected from factions within the CPC. It's like having parties within a main party. Also the CPC is open to anyone who wants to join (provided they are Chinese). Not exactly western 'democracy' (multiple parties elected into power using republican means), but it is similar. Not that the US is a true democracy either (more republic). The Swiss are the closest thing out there to a true democracy. Its like a mix of democratic meritocracy. I can appreciate readers seeing scorn in this, but I would advise studying the Chinese system in more detail before jumping to rash conclusions on what it is.
