@Encryption: Not really. If you have an expensive gateway anyway, you can just terminate the SSL there.

  You can't. FCC does not allow radio traffic to be encrypted on Ham bands.

    Internet <---(ssl,ethernet)---> Gateway <----(plaintext,radio)-----> Ham Insecure, but that's exactly the point. (Also: ham radio in general, not just the FCC. Over here, it's the BNetzA.)
