This is offensive. I know of authors who made it a point to answer all fan mail until it became impractical. That was pre-internet era but the ethic and the empathy were there. It's hard to become successful and encouragement or even negative direct feedback help people. Instead of raising that up as a value the author tells a story about his own snark. It's not pretty and it isn't anything anyone should congratulation him on.
