How would they prove that the damage was caused by a third-party battery if there was no security feature to authenticate first-party ones?
People would buy third party batteries and put the original back before filing a warranty claim
- qb45 11y agoHeat damage or busted overvoltage protection diode. Is there something else a broken/wrong battery can do to a laptop?
- TeMPOraL 11y agoIt can literally burst into flames?
- qb45 11y agoThey sometimes do, but then it's obvious that the laptop has been damaged by battery so the user would better show remnants of a genuine one before asking for warranty replacement.
- Klathmon 11y agoBut warranty replacement is only one aspect, what happens when a social media website gets a tweet from someone saying their lenovo exploded? Something like that could significantly hurt the brand
- qb45 11y agoVarious battery powered devices, including laptops, have been in use for decades. How many times somebody publicly blamed 3rd party battery failure on device vendor? Links or it doesn't happen.
- frankchn 11y agoNot batteries, but Apple has had problems with third party chargers in the past. The initial reports often do not say whether a third party charger/accessory is used and just says things like "Chinese flight attendant electrocuted after picking up charging iPhone 5", which is not a good look for Apple. * http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2484293,00.asp http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2484293,00.asp * http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/chinese-teen-dies-charging-iphone-electrocutes-article-1.1886994 http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/chinese-teen-dies-char...
- reirob 11y agoThis was the case with non-Apple iPhone chargers that damaged the iPhones. I've seen it on TV in France. I would reckon that it strengthened the Apple brand, because since then more users were afraid to buy non-Apple accessories. However it didn't make Apple move to change their interface to a standard USB like other vendors have. So much for brand damage.
- rincebrain 11y agoAs other people have said, fire or blast damage from the battery would be a sign, but they don't even necessarily have to prove it's from the battery to not cover it under warranty, just that it wasn't an inherent manufacturing defect.
