I'd like to know what the distribution of men:women in their data is. Possibly women garner a higher approval rate by way of having a smaller population on github, with a higher rate of skilled developers due to less skilled developers, by way of social pressure and similar, being funneled in other directions first.
Edit: Oh hey, they actually have a link to the full study. Turns out it's 2,923,523 : 141,117. With the merge rates being 74.6% : 78.6%.
Note: This does not mean that i reject the hypothesis that men are more likely to distrust female coders. I do suspect that is quite true.
And indeed the study itself concludes as a likely possibility:
"One explanation is survivorship bias: [...] Another explanation is self-selection bias: [...] Yet another explanation is that women are held to higher performance standards than men [...]"
The most probably conclusion here is not, as the title claims, that women write better code; but that the women who stay long enough to end up submitting PRs submit higher quality code, while the much bigger population of men, under much less social pressure, has a more well-distributed quality curve; and that even women who get this far are biased against if their gender is known.
