Ask HN: Can we have an open source credit bureau?
The world is sharing more information. Every year more data from every aspect of our life is being captured online. Some of it is still private (nonetheless online), but a lot of it is quickly becoming open, prominent example being Facebook. We are sharing more even without realizing it. Not just data, we are opening our homes for strangers based on reputation (AirBnB). I'm wondering if we can build a community and open source data that determine credit decisions (some sort of reputation), could it upend current systems. It can be a summary about each person that gets updated because it’s connected to all these other places where we voluntarily input data. This will solve a lot of problems with people moving countries and their credit history not being used in other countries. All of this will require overcoming a lot of legal hurdles among other things. I'm curious about it as a purely theoretical exercise.
