Well, it would be much worse if they refused to implement those enhancements, or tried to force proprietary or gmail-specific alternatives. They pretty much had to do something to improve e-mail's abysmal confidentiality and authenticity, and at least they used open technologies which can be configured on a Debian VPS in a couple of hours using a HOWTO.
