Toronto tried it. The city is full of ugly, ugly towers. This has made traffic much worse and the public transit system is a pain to navigate. The craziness of traffic made condos right next to the subway much more desirable than 15 minutes away (the last place I lived in had 700K condos for a two bedroom, 40 minutes from Union station). No silver bullet.
That said, I've almost had it with high housing prices. 900K for a crap hole starter home in Sunnyvale does not make sense to me. Unaffordable housing prices are starting to make me want to go to the bottle :'( Curious how other people are dealing with it?
- hueving 11y ago>:'( Curious how other people are dealing with it? Give up on your hopes and dreams and start to convince yourself that renting isn't a bad deal and that you don't really need more than 500 sq ft to be happy.
- soperj 11y agoI didn't think the public transit in toronto was really that bad. If you want to live in Canada somewhere not named Vancouver, Victoria or Toronto, housing prices are very affordable.
- ZanyProgrammer 11y agoToronto is literally the Canadian SF.
- ericabiz 11y ago> Curious how other people are dealing with it? I moved to Austin after 10 years in the Bay Area. No regrets. Great startup/tech scene, no state income tax, more relaxed life, yummy tacos, and I was able to buy a house in a nice neighborhood for about a quarter of what it would have cost me in San Jose. (Oh, and I also am typing this on a Gigabit fiber connection...at my house.)
- rconti 11y agoPower bill 100x what it would be in the Bay Area, too! First few times I visited Austin I thought "you know, I could live here". Third time it was over 100 for 5 days straight. And humid like a sauna. In May. If you can deal, though, more power to ya. I loved Austin.
- nfriedly 11y agoI moved back to Ohio and started working remote again. I now have a nice house on an acre of land, and I'll have it fully paid for in about 10 years (total).
- rconti 11y agoWe actually got a nice place for that kind of money in Redwood City. I love it here. I wish I had a 10 car garage instead of a 0.5 car garage, but frankly, I have no desire to own a lot of land. I don't get the lust for acreage that so many profess. If anything, it seems like folks living in more remote areas complain about their neighbors MORE than folks in the suburbs. Nor do I have a desire to clean 3000sqft of house.
