This isn't intended to replace a dedicated central logging server. Sinklog is useful to quickly tail -f the output of any number of sources (logging via CLI or any logger that can log via syslog) without requiring any setup or complicated integration. Viewing the log stream just requires curl, or any HTTPS client (including websocket).
- dozzie 11y agoAgain, how is it any better than centralized syslog? You just set a rsyslog/syslog-ng/sysklogd/whatever to accept UDP and off you go. Tools and approach are the same in both cases, barring using `tail -f' instead curl, but you don't depend on a random service in internets that could go down at any random moment and that promises not to store anything, but you can't check that. In other words, you need to give something in exchange for getting people's data. Just running a remote syslog instance is not nearly enough, since it's trivial.
- benwilber0 11y agoYep all valid points. My main use case was the ability to quickly tail my logs from wherever I was without having to SSH to my log server and manage syslog configurations if I wanted to add a new log. If I want to share my log streams I can just send somebody a link and they can see log outputs in realtime.
