It means funding indirectly fields like alzheimer research, cancer research or cardiovascular disease research with radical and different approaches, more startup-like. Conventional academic research in these fields is slow-paced like things inside a big corporation, and is also constricted/handicapped by the "Publish or Perish" dogma..
