Since when is APT on the same level at all with the App Store? You're definitely not going to be finding the same quality in the utilities and applications you find in your distributions APT repository as you will on the App Store, simply because developers are unable to charge for them. I hope this article is a joke or something.
- Tichy 17y agoUbuntu is already working on integrating commercial software. Of course payment is one aspect, but the aspect of usability and "unpolluted computing" is another one. I mentioned in the article that apt is not perfect yet - but neither is the App store. Also there are high quality apps that are free, so clearly developers being able to charge is not a necessary precondition for good software. I have nothing against charging for software, and clearly it helped with the explosion of the App store. But the point is, the app store is not the only way. Also, which commercial applications that cost money from the app store are essential?
- docgnome 17y agoSo you argument is that because say... the git devs can't charge for git through apt that it's not as good as say... BitKeeper?
- cmelbye 17y agoSorry, I realized after I posted that that I was hugely inaccurate in my wording. I meant to say that in my experience, "paid" software was much higher quality in the design and usability area than their open source counterparts. There are certainly exceptions, though.
