If my memory serves me, DeviantArt had something similar to this around a decade ago, and I thought it worked very well. It's an entirely different platform though. Also, I don't remember them having such annoying animations, nor omitting such basic emotions as "joy" because "people don't understand it". D|A appears to have axed this system though, for whatever reason. I hope it works out better for Facebook.
