I go to work to eat the free food. THEY SMOKE THEIR OWN BACON. I think companies try to be competitive with the perks (eg google - massages, food within a few steps, a nice space to be.) There is definitely a benefit in that and the social interactions for a young professional to work in a team with smart people can be pretty rewarding too. With modern tooling you can still do that remote - I've seen code review processes work very will with teams that aren't co-located and that has been very rewarding and brought a lot of growth for me personally. But I understand as a family man what you're saying. If I could do remote work I'd probably be in Tamarindo or similar (which I'd like to do one day.) Until then, bacon is pretty awesome.
