Like button has nothing to do with people liking something. It has everything to do with Facebook tracking users on 3rd party web pages. This way they know where you have been, for how long and how often. IMO this data is much more relevant to knowing users interests that enables FB to sell targeted ads. Same goes for Google Analytics: that's the reason it is free - because you are the product.
