I really don't think that the problem with microsoft was their research division being too seperate. although interfacing better with the rest of the company makes sense they've always fallen on their face when it comes to execution, they were a real player in the smartphone sector at one point for example. figure out how to execute on your ideas, the generation of ideas themselves aren't the issue.
