I don't think I got a satisfying answer to "Why now?" Why has the gerontocracy suddenly taken over in so many countries?

  The aging of the post-war baby boom, I guess? Truly just a guess though. Edit: What I mean is, what makes you question that explanation?

    The author is trying to explain a global phenomena. Can an aging demographic bulge explain the Hukou? Honest question.
